How does the selection process work?

Nominations are reviewed by Council members with expertise in the nominee’s specialty or discipline. Each nomination is carefully evaluated and then discussed by AAP Council members. The final slate of new AAP members is assembled during the Council’s two-day meeting in late January/early February.

When will I know whether the nominee has been elected?

AAP members are invited to review all nominees and cast their votes for membership in mid-February. Sponsors, seconders, and nominees are notified of the results in late February.

How many people apply each year?

The AAP typically receives between 150 and 200 nominations each year.

Why is there a cap on the number of new members elected each year?

The AAP By-Laws limit the number of new U.S. members elected each year to 70. A small number of international members may also be elected.

Can international scholars be nominated?

Yes. International nominees are eligible for AAP membership. Elected members, regardless of where they are based, are expected to participate in the AAP’s annual meeting held each April in Chicago.

Can a nominee be elected if they cannot attend the meeting?

Yes. Attendance at the annual meeting is not a condition of election. However, newly elected members who are unable to attend will not be able to participate in the New Member Dinner, which is held in conjunction with the annual meeting each April.
