Overview

The ideal AAP nominee is a physician-scientist who has produced sustained, substantive, innovative, investigator-initiated research that is recognized as reshaping their discipline. We seek investigators from the full spectrum of medical specialties who work in any area of biomedical research at any institution or organization.

All successful AAP nominees:

• Have made significant scientific discoveries and have generated new knowledge that has had impact on one or more fields in biomedicine.
• Are thought leaders in their field. This is typically manifest by well-cited publications in high impact journals. Leadership positions such as Dean, Chair or Chief are not essential criteria and are in themselves insufficient to merit AAP election.

Most successful AAP nominees:

• Have a legacy of successful trainees working as physician scientists
• Have a track record of high impact publications that have advanced their field
• Have current peer reviewed funding to support their science.
• Have attained the rank of Full Professor or senior stage Associate Professor. There are no strict criteria regarding nominees’ rank. Physician scientists based in government or industry are candidates for AAP membership.
• Are members of ASCI, with new accomplishments since election. ASCI membership is not a prerequisite for AAP nomination. A minimum of two years between ASCI election and AAP nomination is advised.
• Remain actively engaged in investigation at the time of their nomination.
• If the nominee is a clinical trialist, there should be clear evidence that he/she is a thought leader in the conceptualization of the study design and/or the science underpinning the interventions. Leadership of industry sponsored trials is rarely sufficient to support AAP membership.
